Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... For Now.

Vince Gilligan never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed series coming to an end—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—the creative team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

Regarding the Tremendous Fan Response

One could easily to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and online debates about Pluribus. The creator is striving to steer clear of all that.

“The experience is akin to constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”

Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We don't try to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by what people are saying.”

“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.

The Central Mystery: Will the showrunner See the Finale of Pluribus?

Considering Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… with some caveats.

“There are some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to abandon a good idea for a better idea. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

On the other hand, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.

“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Then again, why mess with the legendary finales?

“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
