The Two Fatalities Named in Brown University Attack as Police Persist in Hunt for Killer.
Two students who died in the recent violent attack at Brown University had tributes paid to them on Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their assailant persisted following the discharge by authorities in Rhode Island of the single suspect detained in connection in the case.
Remembering Ella Cook
The student Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was described as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, per the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which honored her memory at a ceremony on Sunday.
Cook was second-in-command of Brown’s division of the College Republicans organization, the group said. Karoline Leavitt also expressed words of sorrow online, saying in part: “It's indescribable. Keeping in mind her kin and peers, especially her parents.”
An International Student
The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his first year of studies at the prestigious university, his family confirmed.
The victim's identification was confirmed by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.
“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. His ambitions were lofty of entering the field of neurosurgery and helping people,” his sibling Samira said in a memorial statement.
The Shooting Incident
An additional nine individuals were hurt in Saturday’s attack in the engineering building of Brown’s university in Providence, during the university's examination week.
Authorities said on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man taken into custody in a search at a hotel about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“A perpetrator remains free,” said Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.
He continued, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you have to regroup and go in another, and this is precisely what occurred over the last 24 hours or so.”
Public Fear
Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “This will probably generate renewed concern for our city”.
The shooter opened fire inside a classroom in the building on Saturday, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm pistol, a law enforcement official informed the media outlet.
Police that searched the lodging seized a pair of pistols and two ammunition clips when the suspect was taken into custody, the news agency reported.
Condition of the Injured
Of the nine hurt, one student was released from the hospital, said Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in serious yet stable state, and one was in critical condition, police said on Sunday.
Durham Academy, a independent school in North Carolina, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.
Further Tributes
Cook was honored at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only during her upbringing... but at the university she was a radiant presence in that particular place as well.”
A group leader, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the organization. “Ella was known for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and other students,” he said.
An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by Umurzokov’s death in a statement. “We extend our sincere condolences to his relatives, friends, and schoolmates and mourn the loss of his potential.”
