The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Leader.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life without fear.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “6-7” – deriving from a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The trend became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently declared “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Every time, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
