People have gathered around the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-conducted attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The attack led to over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most deadliest day for Jewish people since the World War II.

Israel responded by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"The violent opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "realize all the goals of the war: the release of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a danger to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership delayed formal remembrance events until 16 October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but ceremonies still took place around the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was aired across Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a silent tribute was held across the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams met in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the conditions of the agreement.

A prominent delegate knowledgeable about the discussions said that an night meeting of indirect talks began at 7 PM local time.

The representative stated the morning session concluded without tangible results, because of disagreements over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the arrangement.

He noted that the negotiations are "tough and have still not achieve any significant progress," but mentioned that facilitators are striving to close the differences between the conflicting groups.

Critical Points in Discussions

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The swap of the prisoners still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance provision
  • Future governance of the area

Public Sentiment

In the city's memorial area that day, young a woman - whose sibling lived through the attack on the outdoor event, where many attendees were murdered and numerous more were captured by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No location appears as home now and until all the hostages return none of us will be secure."

"Once we see everybody home returned, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to heal," she concluded.

Outside the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to demonstrate their support for the families of the captives. Israel states nearly fifty stay in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Demonstrator a participant explained: "It's necessary do every compromise needed for the captives to be released. But we truly desire assurances that we will be protected."

Surveys now consistently show that about the majority of the population prefer the hostilities to conclude in as payment for the liberation of the hostages.

Palestinian Conditions

At the area of the gathering, grieving people gathered to remember the victims.

From that location, the sound of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers indicated the heavy Israeli shelling persisted.

In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and locality districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well the camp to the northwest.

"As the dusk comes, the anxiety arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli air strike previously, described.

"My family are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, holding each other, especially my little child who puts his face on me the entire evening."

"Every second we check the updates to see the situation. And I'm worried that this halt will not be achieved and that the war will return to us."

Health Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported it had taken in the bodies of half dozen people by the midday, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Another medical facility in the southern urban center of that area reported another two victims had been brought there. One of them was lost his life by Israeli forces while seeking help to the south, medics stated.
