The Mayor-Elect confirms plans to make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue in his run for office.
A Historic Residence
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors after the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central platform, hesitated to declare he would live there promptly after his triumph in November.
"This decision rested on our family's safety and the imperative to dedicating all of my focus on carrying out the agenda for affordability New Yorkers voted for," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
A Fond Farewell
Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area famous for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he noted.
"Even though I'm moving there, Astoria will always live a part of me and the work I do," he affirmed.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani tied his central policy – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his critics, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing although he hails from a prominent family.
A House Not Always Used
Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg felt it should be a space for official events, and championed a major refurbishment of the older mansion.
A Stately Residence
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria digs.
Featuring cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.
Internally, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed consistent with the home's historical period.
The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is rent-stabilized, meaning the city imposes caps on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
City residents see such units as essential protections as the cost of housing outpaces the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
