Scream OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment marks the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a character you played in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that kept me up at night," the actor admits.
An Unexpected Return for Fallen Favorites
It has been established that a trio of distinct characters from earlier films are set to return in this new outing, even though meeting their demise in prior movies. The precise method of their resurrection remains a mystery. Fans should prepare for the return of the beloved and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the director and third film killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first time since a brief cameo is a long-held wish, even if he is apprehensive about the audience response. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he got the news from the original writer.
"I recall the conversation. I recall the pleasantries. I recall him asking. That instance is permanently etched on my psyche," he states. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the decades since the original film premiered, which left Lillard feeling quite nervous.
"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he notes. "A character that is now represented in each and every Scream mask that walks around every Halloween."
The Anxiety of Disappointing the Fandom
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He confesses to feeling immense anxiety about not wanting to be the one who damages the beloved series.
"The outcome is either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I have no idea if the movie's be successful. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the series. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Theories and Excitement Run High
While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others come back persists. Perhaps they exist as manifestations in Sidney's mind, similar to a previous plot device. Alternatively, maybe they are somehow still living in a bizarre communal situation. The chance of a meta-horror story, inspired by earlier genre films, also exists.
Audiences will find out the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
