No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to hospital.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.
