Government Cuts Back US Flights as Government Closure Drags On

As the unprecedented federal government closure nears day 38, US flight paths will become less congested. This doesn't apply for US terminals.

Precautionary Steps Enacted

The current administration's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced flight numbers are being lowered to maintain air traffic control operational integrity during the federal government funding lapse, now the longest recorded and with little indication of a agreement between conservative legislators and Democratic representatives to end the federal budget standoff.

Aviation authorities identified “high-volume markets” where the FAA says air traffic requires reduction by 4% by 6am ET on Friday, a move that would force airlines to cancel thousands of flights and create a series of scheduling complications and hold-ups at key American travel hubs.

Official Statement

The federal transportation leader, Sean Duffy, wrote on online platforms Thursday that the decision was “not politically driven” but rather “involving evaluation the data and alleviating accumulating danger in the system as controllers continue working without pay”.

“It’s safe to fly today, tomorrow, and the day after because of the forward-thinking steps we are taking,” Duffy added.

Travel Disruptions

Experts predict hundreds or even thousands of flights may be scrapped. These reductions may constitute approximately 1,800 flights and upwards of 268,000 seats combined, per an estimate by the aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Impacted Locations

The involved terminals covering more than two dozen states include the most trafficked across the US – such as Atlanta, North Carolina's city, Colorado's hub, Texas metroplex, Florida destination, Los Angeles, Miami and SFO. Among key urban centers – like New York, Texas city and Illinois hub – several air terminals will be involved.

The trio of airports serving the DC metro – Dulles Airport, BWI and Ronald Reagan Washington national – will be impacted, inevitably causing schedule changes for lawmakers as well as other travelers.
