Gareth Southgate Reveals Direction on Mentoring Young People Over Football Management

Sir Gareth Southgate has declared that he is not seeking a re-entry into football management, pointing out that it would be tough to match the higher calling he experienced as head of the Three Lions.

Southgate suggested his intention to dedicate his efforts toward supporting young people and combating what he called a dominant downbeat story now existing in the country.

Pursuing New Avenues Away from Coaching

During a broadcast discussion, the manager was asked about talk linking him with available jobs in the English football and abroad.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he responded. “Recreating that unique role won’t be easy. With 37 years in football behind me, I’m excited to identify fresh ways to create impact.”

A Passion for Role Models

Ahead of the publication of his new title, his new work on leadership, the author shared that he is deeply committed about setting examples for young people, utilizing experiences from his period as leader of the England team between 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

He maintains that his time coaching England, during which the team evolved from being strongly criticized to widely supported, holds wider relevance.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he explained. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Raising Children and Guiding Young People

Drawing on his family life, the coach remarked: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He added: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”

Unity Over Discord

Southgate asserted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the societal attention often centers on disagreement.

“It’s understandable why people are disaffected,” he commented. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

The manager’s upcoming publication, Dear England, is expected to offer deeper reflections on management and public spirit inspired by his notable career.
