Educator Slain and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Armed Clash at School in Nigeria
Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a educational institution for young women in north-western Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The criminal group breached the public educational institution for female students in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on Monday, officials stated.
The armed individuals "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a firefight" before scaling the perimeter fence and taking the pupils captive from their dormitory, an official report indicated.
A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now receiving treatment.
Observers recounted a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to cause panic.
Community members disclosed to media that the gunmen subsequently marched a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.
The police said they had deployed "supplementary tactical squads, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.
A organized locating and saving mission is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and potential getaway paths.
In recent years, schools in northern Nigeria have regularly come under attack for weapon-carrying factions, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or leverage deals with the government.
The attack in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge afflicting the area, leaving families in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they expect and desire their young ones' unharmed reappearance.
Protection challenge in Nigeria's northern territories has intensified significantly in the past few months, with schools suffering the most of the violence.
