Diane Ladd, Famed For Her Role in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Dies at 89 Years Old.

The Academy Award-nominated performer the celebrated Diane Ladd passed away aged 89.

The actor, with filmography included Chinatown, left this world in her residence in California’s Ojai. Her passing was revealed via an announcement from her offspring, Academy Award-winning star her daughter Laura Dern.

Her daughter, who starred with Diane Ladd in several movies like Rambling Rose, called her “my incredible hero and my special gift of a mother”, noting that she was by her side when she passed.

“She was the greatest grandmother, mother, daughter, star, artist along with empathetic spirit that only dreams could have seemingly created,” she wrote. “We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”

Beginnings and Major Success

The start of her career saw minor parts in television programs such as The Fugitive and that decade featured her performing next to Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.

During that year, the year 1974, she shared the screen with Ellen Burstyn in the Martin Scorsese acclaimed comedy drama the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her acting landed Ladd an Academy Award nomination in the supporting actress category.

Later Decades

During the eighties, she was seen in crime thriller the movie Black Widow as well as humorous film Christmas Vacation while also joining Alice, a comedy program based on the film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

In the subsequent decade, she earned another supporting actress nomination for her role in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart, a cult classic in which she portrayed the parent of her biological child the character played by Dern. A year later she obtained an additional nod for her performance in Rambling Rose, another movie which also starred her daughter.

“This was the picture that the late Princess Diana picked as her top choice, and she brought me and Laura to London for a special screening and a celebration for us,” Ladd said regarding Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, holding both our hands, and weeping, seeing us act.”

That decade also saw roles in humorous films The Cemetery Club joining her again with her co-star Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political story, a political comedy, featuring John Travolta and Payne’s the movie Citizen Ruth in which she portrayed Laura Dern’s mom another time. The decade also earned her nominations for Emmy Awards for roles in the series Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel.

Collaborations with Daughter

She continued to star alongside her daughter in films blending humor and drama the film Daddy and Them, Lynch’s Inland Empire, a surreal film and White’s comedy-drama series Enlightened. She was also seen with Sandra Bullock, a star in the film 28 Days, Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian, a film and Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, a biographical drama.

Her later TV roles included the series Ray Donovan and Young Sheldon, a comedy.

Filmmaking Ventures

She also authored and directed the humorous movie the movie Mrs Munck that included Diane Ladd and ex-husband Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is a talented star,” she mentioned. “I’m privileged to have directed him in a film. Actually, I stand as the only woman in history to helm a film with her ex. I humorously say: ‘I advise females, if you seek payback, helm a movie with your ex.’ Though I’m just teasing.”

Family Ties

Ladd was also the third cousin of the great Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a major inspiration in my life”.

In 2018, doctors misdiagnosed Ladd with a pulmonary condition and informed she only had half a year left but made a full recovery once her daughter moved her to another medical facility.

“If you can take your pain and prevent it from festering like an injury, instead use it to discover, to clarify the journey for yourself and others, then you are triumphing,” Ladd remarked.
