Cameroon Opposition Leader to Face Legal Action Over Election Unrest, Government Declares

Election Protest in Cameroon
Numerous in Cameroon show outrage over the fact that the president has won an eighth presidential term

The nation's Minister of the Interior Paul Atanga Nji has stated that opposition leader Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over accusations that he instigated "aggressive post-election demonstrations".

No fewer than 4 protesters have been killed during skirmishes between security forces and opposition supporters since the presidential election on October 12, with the 92-year-old head of state obtaining an eighth consecutive term.

Tchiroma Bakary asserts that he emerged victorious, a statement rejected by the governing party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Forceful measures by police and security officers on protesters have worried the world leaders, with the United Nations, African Union and European Union urging restraint.

Official's Accusations

On Tuesday, the interior minister charged the opposition figure of coordinating what he labeled "unlawful" demonstrations resulting in the deaths, and also criticised him for claiming win in the election.

He added that the opposition leader's "accomplices responsible for an insurrectionary plan" will also undergo judicial processes.

Vote Outcome

Cameroon's leader, who came to power in 1982 and is now the oldest serving president, secured the 12 October presidential election with over half of the votes, compared to 35.2% for his opponent, according to the electoral authority.

Leader's Stance

Issa Tchiroma is yet to respond to the official announcement to bring him to court, but he had previously declared that he refused to acknowledge a rigged election - and that he was not afraid of being arrested.

On election result day, he said that armed men opened fire on demonstrators assembled near his residence in Garoua, killing at least two civilians.

Investigation Announced

Earlier this week, the government official revealed that an investigation would be started into clashes prior to and following the publication of the poll figures.

"Throughout the violence, some of the individuals involved lost their lives," he commented, without offering a specific number of demonstrators who have been fatally injured in the clashes.

Nji further mentioned that several personnel of the police and military also suffered major harm.

Ongoing Circumstances

Although the interior minister maintained the condition across the country was now under control, demonstrators remain active in various areas of the country, especially in these two cities, where demonstrators set up roadblocks on Tuesday, and set fire to tyres on the streets.

Observers caution that the post-electoral violence could push the country into a leadership vacuum.
