Cameron Norrie achieved the most important victory of his professional journey by coming back from a set down to defeat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the Paris Masters.

While he had before overcome Alcaraz on two occasions, this win marks Norrie's first ever win over a reigning world No 1.

"Enormous. Incredibly significant for me," said Norrie, who is now the newest UK male player in the record books to overcome a global number one. "Returning from a physical setback last year, I was defeated in the initial match of qualies here. I just tried to appreciate my performance in the latter part of the year. To secure a victory like this, it's the biggest success of my tennis journey, my first win over the global number one and arguably the strongest player in the tennis scene right now."

The British player, seeded 31st globally, also halted Alcaraz's dominant sequence of nine consecutive finals and 17 straight elite tournament successes, which was the top run of outcomes in the Spaniard's developing professional path.

Contest Breakdown

The top seed seemed to be progressing easily towards victory at the start as he eased past the initial stanza. However, Norrie steadily battled back back into the game by serving with improved accuracy and engaging the Spanish opponent into prolonged, physical rallies.
