California is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Time in a Quarter Century.

For the first time in 25 years, no portion of the state is enduring dryness. This milestone follows challenging years marked by insufficient rainfall that exacerbated fire dangers and pressured its huge agribusiness.

A Map Shows No Drought

A recent update from the national drought tracker illustrated that California in its entirety is clear of drought or abnormal dryness. This change resulted from a period of heavy precipitation that replenished water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville well above their historic averages.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” remarked a climate scientist.

After Severe Systems to Wet Holidays

Achieving this status featured severe and lethal winter storms that pummeled the state in the not-too-distant past, resulting in widespread flooding, blackouts, and tragic losses. Even though those events began to alleviate the drought, they fell short of ending it.

As late as late December, pockets like the state's northeast corner were deemed unusually parched. Substantial precipitation at the onset of 2026 eliminated those last vestiges of dryness.

Essential Mountain Snowfall Presents a Challenge

However, hydrologists note that being out of drought is not the same as complete water security. Recent measurements of the high-elevation snow show it at only about 70% of the average for this date.

This snowpack, which supplies a significant portion of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is an essential component for the year ahead. Water officials stress that it is premature to draw conclusions for the months ahead.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” said a hydrology section chief. “The goal is the snow accumulation to improve by the start of April so that we’re closer to average.”

While the drought map is entirely green, the focus now shifts to sustaining this positive water situation during the rest of the year.
