British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
His passing follows shortly after he debuted his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he began working on outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
