Attorney General Calls On Nigel Farage to Apologise Over Alleged Racism and Antisemitism.

The United Kingdom's top law officer, one of the most senior Jewish ministers, has urged the Reform UK leader to issue an apology to school contemporaries who allege he targeted with racist abuse them during their time at school.

Hermer remarked that Farage had "obviously deeply hurt" many people, based on their testimonies of his alleged conduct. He noted that the leader's "constantly changing" explanations had been less than credible.

“In his answers to legitimate questions, not once has Farage actually condemned antisemitism,” Hermer stated to a news outlet.

New Allegations Emerge

A recent investigation last month documented the accounts of several one-time schoolmates of Farage from a south London school.

One, Peter Ettedgui, described that a teenage Farage "would approach me and say: ‘Hitler was right’ or ‘send them to the gas chambers’, occasionally including a long hiss to mimic the sound of the Nazi gas chambers”.

Another minority ethnic pupil claimed that when he was about nine, he was singled out by a 17-year-old Farage.

“He approached a pupil flanked by two similarly tall mates and spoke to anyone looking ‘unusual’,” the person said. “That involved me on three occasions; questioning me where I was from, and pointing away, saying: ‘Go back that way,’ to wherever you said you were from.”

After the story broke, additional individuals have come forward; around two dozen people have now alleged they were either victims of or saw deeply offensive actions by Farage.

The incidents they outlined cover the period when Farage was aged between 13 and 18.

Evolving Explanations

The political figure has rejected that anything he did was "blatantly" racist or antisemitic, and has asserted the former classmates were being untruthful.

Commentators have highlighted that Farage has not managed to condemn antisemitism and other forms of racism in a wider sense in his responses.

They also cite his failure to discipline a colleague in his party, Sarah Pochin, after she made remarks about the number of people of colour she saw in television commercials. She later expressed regret for the remarks.

“Nigel Farage’s evolving narrative about his behaviour to his schoolmates [is] hard to believe, to say the least,” Hermer commented.

He added: “Claiming that 20 people have somehow misremembered the same things about his nasty behaviour simply isn’t credible."

Demand for Accountability

“If he aspires to be seen as a legitimate candidate for the top job, he urgently needs acknowledge the concerns of the Jewish community, and say sorry to the numerous individuals he has clearly deeply hurt by his behaviour,” Hermer said.

“Bigotry in all its forms is anathema to the standards of this country and we should not let it to ever become accepted in politics.”

In a different discussion, the Chancellor said Farage should “speak out” if he wanted to be considered a genuine leader.

“It is very telling how little he has to say, and the guarded phrasing that both you and I would identify as being written in a specific manner to say something, but also not to say something,” she noted.

Formal Denials and Subsequent Comments

In lawyers' communications prior to the release of the report, Farage’s legal team stated that “the suggestion that Mr Farage ever was involved in, supported, or led this behaviour is completely refuted”.

Farage later altered his position in an appearance, stating: “Did I say things as a youth that you could interpret as being playground talk, you could interpret in a today's standards today in some sort of way? Possibly.”

He commented that he had “not once intentionally really tried to go and harm anybody”. Farage subsequently released a further comment: “I can tell you categorically that I did not say the things that have been reported aged 13, decades in the past.”
