As Sunbathers Fled Danger, Popular Picture Depicts Rescuer Running ‘Full Speed’ In the Direction of the Site.
Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, views the famous shoreline as her personal space. On that particular weekend evening, she, like many local residents, heard cracking sounds reverberating around the neighbourhood.
“Everyone did, but I thought it was too light and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Exiting her residence, she saw people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw made it clear trouble had occurred.
As she stood on the avenue, conversing with a couple who had run up the hill in their swimwear, she became aware of someone approaching from behind. The person was a lifeguard, running at full speed to Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.
“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. He was alone running in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to get away from, carrying that large equipment and unshod … He’s running towards something that surely every part of you would tell you to go in the reverse way.
“Without a second thought, but just fully full throttle sprinting.”
A Symbol of Heroism During Chaos
The photograph that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many moments of valour in the following of the violent incident.
Andy Reid, another lifeguard, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, officers and medical teams caring for numerous victims.
Collective Outpouring and Solidarity
Doolan’s story was a single example among several to come out of the neighbourhood, with the patrol base beside the scene of the attack becoming a impromptu treatment center. It was shared that other team members were also seen helping out, such as going into the water to assist people needing help.
After the attack, comments of gratitude were shared. An online statement shared appreciation for the responders who demonstrated that “kindness will always triumph over darkness”.
The group of beach patrol published a message, noting they were “coming to terms with what happened”.
“Thank you all for your supportive words and support. We are overwhelmed by the compassion shown towards our responders,” the organization stated. “Eventually, we will share our stories in the aim that it supports those affected.”
Official Recognition
Waverley council, the local authority that employs many full-time lifeguards, said that the crew rose to the occasion from the instant the incident commenced through to late that evening.
“We have heard so many powerful stories, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is incredible,” stated a council representative.
“These individuals demonstrate selflessness every day in keeping our world-famous coastlines secure for visitors, but what we witnessed on Sunday should be commended.
“While we mourn and process the terror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much good we have observed in the face of such evil.”
